Twelve Dreams
Written & Directed by James Lapine
Twelve Dreams was inspired by a case study contained in Carl Jung's 1964 book Man and His Symbols. The case concerns a 10-year-old girl who gave her father, a psychiatrist, an unusual Christmas present. Set in 1936-37 in a New England university town, Emma presents her practicing psychiatrist and lecturer father with a Christmas gift, a handwritten collection detailing 12 of her dreams.

Reviews & Features
“Lapine, who always brings a designer’s eye to his staging — note the square pools of light the actors often find themselves in — has wisely kept everything about the production understated. The company, perfectly cast… underplays admirably. The result is itself a riveting dream which, for all its unsettling animal imagery, never loses its focus on the people at its core; it’s an enormously empathic evening.”
“As Mr. Lapine has devised a method to accomplish his task in purely theatrical terms - through imagery and buried narrative, not explicatory speeches - one can only admire the brilliance of his overall conception… As in his staging of Falsettos and his own Table Settings, Mr. Lapine is bursting with clever directorial ideas here.”
