James Lapine is an American stage director, playwright, screenwriter, and librettist.
He has won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical three times, for Into the Woods, Falsettos, and Passion. He also wrote and directed Sunday in the Park with George, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the development process of which was chronicled in his New York Times best-selling book, Putting It Together.
